Quest is a new school with a new focus: giving you – as a young person – the chance to change your life.
Many young people, like you, find themselves with adult responsibilities they didn’t expect. You may be raising young children on your own, caring for your siblings, or working full-time to help your family make ends meet. It’s difficult or impossible to attend school during the day. Quest is a real high school with a real diploma accepted at any college, university or vocational school. You will attend free, no-tuition classes after work, from 4:30 – 9:45 p.m. with classmates who work right alongside you. Quest teachers and staff also work with you to find college financial aid, along with new, exciting career opportunities. "We want young adults to know that it is not too late," said Melissa Barnett, school leader at Quest. Quest is registering new students right now. Call the school at 602-243-8496 to make an appointment and see how to create a new future of your own at Quest! ![]() It was this week in 1959 that Vince Lombardi took on the coaching job of the Green Bay Packers. as head coach and general manager of the Green Bay Packers, Lombardi led the team to three NFL championships and to victories in Super Bowls I and II (1967 and 1968). He was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1913. One of the reasons he is known as one of the greatest coaches ever, and the super bowl award is named after him, is because he turned the Green Bay Packers team completely around. The season before his arrival, Green bay ended with one win and 10 loses during that season. The following season, Lombardi led them to a 7 wins and 5 loses and they finish 3rd in the western conference. His second season he took them almost all the way to a championship victory, only losing to the Philadelphia Eagles by 4 points in 1960. And as previously mentioned, the Packers then went on to win Super Bowl 1 and 2 in 1967 and 1968. Then, as coach, general manager and part owner of the Washington Redskins, Lombardi led that team to its first winning season in 14 years in 1969. Because of his success, he became a national symbol of single-minded determination to win. There are over 50 quotes from his life that get used over and over when people talk about winning, diversity, courage and the drive to be the best. One of my favorites is: “The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.” Vince Lombardi died from colon cancer in 1970. The next year, he was entered into the Hall of Fame. That is all for today! Have a GREAT day, or don’t…..but remember, the choice is yours! ![]() Unless you have been living under a rock, you must know that Super Bowl 48 will be played on Sunday at 4:30p. This years’ game pits the NFC’s Seattle Seahawks against the AFC’s Denver Broncos. The Seahawks joined the NFL in 1976 as an expansion team. The Seahawks are owned by Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, and are currently coached by Pete Carroll. The Seahawks are the only NFL franchise located in the Pacific Northwest region, so they have fans from many neighboring states including Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Alaska, as well as thousands of fans in the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Alberta. Their fans are referred to as the 12th man. These fans pride themselves for their ability to disrupt opposing offenses by yelling in key moments. They are so loud that opposing teams have been known to practice with rock music blaring at full blast to prepare for the often painfully high decibel levels generated at games. The fan noise is so disruptive that from 2002 through 2012, there have been 143 false-start penalties on visiting teams in Seattle. They were so loud that they actually set a new world record for loudest stadium noise in December of last year. The Seahawks have won eight division titles and appeared in Super Bowl XL after the 2005 season. Now, onto their opposition, the Denver Broncos; The Broncos began play in 1960. After a rough start of nearly 13 years of losing seasons, in 1977, they made the playoffs for the first time in franchise history and advanced to Super Bowl 12. Since then, the Broncos have become one of the NFL's more successful teams, having suffered only six losing seasons in 35 years. They have won seven AFC Championships and two Super Bowls. Some feel that one of the things that turned the team around was the acquisition of quarterback, John Elway, in 1983. In the 16 years Elway was with the Broncos, he took them to 5 Super Bowls, winning two of them. In 1999, during Super Bowl 33, he was named Super Bowl MVP. More recently, on March 20, 2012, the Broncos and quarterback Peyton Manning reached an agreement on a 5-year contract worth $96 million. Although that first year with Peyton wasn’t spectacular, and the off season proved to be challenging, the Broncos performed very well in the 2013 season, ending up with a pre super bowl 13-1 record and the number 1 seed spot. The team also set numerous franchise and league records, including touchdowns and points scored, and quarterback Peyton Manning setting new NFL single-season records for passing yardage and passing touchdowns. So, there you have it. As you can tell, Super Bowl 48 should prove to be an exciting game. I mean, the Broncos and Seahawks were both the top seeds in their conference during the playoffs. Both top seeds have met in the Super Bowl only one other time in the past two decades. And unless you can afford to pay the $3,500 ticket price to see the game in person, tune in to fox on Sunday and cheer on your team to victory! A Grammy Award (originally called a Gramophone Award) is an accolade by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States to recognize outstanding achievement in the music industry. The annual presentation ceremony features performances by prominent artists, and some of the awards of more popular interest are presented in a widely viewed televised ceremony. The Grammy Awards had their origin in the Hollywood Walk of Fame project in the 1950s. When the list of important recoding industry people were chosen for the Walk of Fame, the committee realized that there were many more people who were leaders in the business who would never earn a star on Hollywood Boulevard. They decided to rectify this by creating an award given by their industry similar to the Oscars and the Emmys. This was the beginning of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Then, there was the question of what to call it; one suggestion was the Eddie, to honor the inventor of the phonograph, Thomas Edison. However, they finally settled on using a shortened version of the word gramophone, which is what the original record player was called, for the awards. The first Grammy Awards ceremony was held on May 4, 1959, and it was set up to honor musical accomplishments by performers for the year 1958. The gold-plated trophies, each depicting a gilded gramophone, are made and assembled by hand by Billings Artworks in Ridgway, Colorado. However, the trophies with the recipient's name engraved on them are not available until after the award announcements, so "stunt" trophies are re-used each year for the broadcast. As of February 2009, 7,578 Grammy trophies had been awarded. The group U2, with 22 Grammy Awards, holds the record for most awards won by a group. Nor, will part chocolate, part white suffice. It must be chocolate, all chocolate. You can make milk chocolate, dark chocolate, fudge, or any other type of chocolate cake. There are three objectives of Chocolate Cake Day: To bake a chocolate cake. To decorate a chocolate cake. And, to eat a chocolate cake. Of course, if you are too busy to bake or decorate a cake, then just eating a chocolate cake will certainly do! The history of cake dates back to ancient times. The first cakes were very different from what we eat today. They were more bread-like and sweetened with honey. Nuts and dried fruits were often added. According to the food historians, the ancient Egyptians were the first culture to show evidence of advanced baking skills. The Oxford English Dictionary traces the English word cake back to the 13th century. Medieval European bakers often made fruitcakes and gingerbread, which could last for many months. According to the food historians, the precursors of modern cakes, the round ones with icing, were first baked in Europe sometime in the mid-17th century. This is due to primarily to advances in technology, like more reliable ovens, manufacture/availability of food mold and ingredient availability, like refined sugar. It was not until the middle of the 19th century that cake as we know it today, made with extra refined white flour and baking powder instead of yeast, arrived on the scene. And thank goodness! I mean what’s a birthday without cake as we know it today?! And speaking of birthdays, Grecia Perez, your sister Karla wants to wish you a very happy 18th birthday today! If you see Grecia around campus today, make sure to wish her a happy birthday!! Enjoy your day! Don’t’ forget that the out of class policy is firmly in effect school wide. Have a GREAT day, or don’t…..but remember, the choice is yours! ![]() Hello Quest hornets! Today is National Pie day! The American Pie Council created this day simply to celebrate the pie. National Pie Day is a special day that is set aside to bake and cook all of your favorite pies. On this day, you are also encouraged to bake a few new pie recipes. But most importantly, it's a day to eat pies! Did you know that pies are actually defined by their crusts? They are! There are filled pies or single crust pies, which are exactly what they sound like, there are also top crust pies, which are also known as cobblers and finally there are two crust pie, which has the filling completely enclosed in the pastry shell, and is my favorite. The first pies appeared around 9500 BC, in the Egyptian Neolithic period or New Stone Age. Early pies were in the form of flat, round or freeform crusty cakes called galettes containing honey as a treat inside. Ancient Greeks are believed to have originated pie pastry. The Romans also made a plain pastry of flour, oil, and water to cover meats and fowls which were baked, thus keeping in the juices. The Pilgrim fathers and early settlers brought their pie recipes with them to America, adapting to the ingredients and techniques available to them in the New World. Their first pies were based on berries and fruits pointed out to them by the Native North Americans. Pies allowed colonial cooks to stretch ingredients and also used round shallow pans to literally "cut corners," and create a regional variation of shallow pie. Of course, the best way to celebrate national pie day would be to have a yummy piece of your favorite pie. However, you could also celebrate by baking some pies and giving them away to friends, neighbors, and relatives. You never know, you might be starting a tradition of pie giving between your friends and family. Happy national pie day!! Don’t’ forget that the out of class policy is firmly in effect school wide. As a reminder, you have been granted 5 restroom/get a drink passes for the remainder of the block. Bull winning with a whopping $10.94 in her box! That is AWESOME! Great job ms. Bull’s 2nd hour, you guys really have the giving spirit! However, we are now changing things up a bit. The boxes are still in your classrooms and key club still wants you to continue to donate those pennies. But, now you can undo another classes progress!! All you need to do is add silver change in to any classrooms box! It’s that easy. So, if we wanted to kill Ms. Bull’s lead you would add quarters, dimes and nickels to her classroom box. The total silver in her box will then be SUBTRACTED from her total next week! But wait there’s more! If you suspect that your classroom is the target of lots of silver, then pop a couple dollar bills in there. Each dollar will count as 100 and will go a long way in undoing those silver coins! Lets see how we can do this week! Key club will count up the totals again on Tuesday and get us an update for Wednesday morning! So hornets, get out there and donate!!! And finally, for lunch we are serving orange chicken with brown rice, cucumbers and pineapple chunks! Sounds delicious! Make sure to get some food and fuel that brain for learning! That is all for today! Have a GREAT day, or don’t…..but remember, the choice is yours! ![]() Today is National Hugging day! In 2013, Scott Van Duzer, owner of Big Apple Pizza & Pasta Italian Restaurant in Fort Pierce, Florida won the most huggable person award. In September 2012, Scott was visited by President Obama at his restaurant. To everyone's surprise, Scott actually picked up the President and began Bear Hugging! No question that daring hug earned last year's top honor! Did you know that hugging can actually be beneficial to your health? Studies have shown that when you give or get a heart hug, a hug with hearts touching, that the oxytocin levels in your body rise. Oxytocin is the chemical responsible for helping to lower your blood pressure, helping to lower your heart rate and it also tends to give you a more positive outlook on things. So, even one simple hug can create a calming, peaceful feeling. Can you imagine what a prescription for at least 10 hugs a day could do for your overall wellbeing and outlook on everyday life!? Why not try it out today and celebrate “let’s hug day!” Get your hug on!!! And just as a quick reminder, our new out of class policy is in effect school wide. Remember, you have been granted 5 restroom/get a drink passes for the remainder of the block. Your passes are not to be used for anything else other than going to the restroom or getting a drink of water. Then, if you were unable to attend one of them or you just want to get them ALL done in one day, will be offering each workshop again on Friday, math 1st hour, reading 2nd hour and writing 3rd hour. So, mark your calendars and plan on being there! Okay, listen up! As we mentioned last week, starting today, you will have to have your student ID to receive a bus pass. Students that have their student ID will be served first. Anybody without an ID will have to wait. If you don’t have a School ID, let the office know after classes or at lunch and they will get you taken care of. Also, remember, the student store will be open at lunchtime at 11:45 when that first bell rings and close at the second bell. You must be in your classroom by the third bell, because your teachers will be locking the doors. And as we warned you about last week, if you are not in your seat by that third bell, you will not be permitted into class and you will have to leave campus. So get to steppin and make sure you get to your third hour ON TIME, or even better, a little bit early. And, don't forget that if you are a graduating senior and you are thinking about taking the SAT’s you need to see Mrs. Rodriguez. She will be the one who can help you get more information on testing dates and prep. So, Hornets, let me remind you about the penny boxes in your classrooms. These boxes are for a fund raiser the key club is heading up. It is the Pennies for Patients program that benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Your job is to simply drop in your spare pennies. At the end of February, the 2nd hour class with the most money in their box will win a prize. We will be getting weekly updates from the key club to see how the contest is progressing. Last year we did great and raised about $150, so this year we’d like raise even more and set a goal of $200. We can do it hornets!! And finally, for lunch we are serving beef nachos, refried beans, and diced peaches. Sounds delicious! Make sure to get some food and fuel that brain for learning! That is all for today! Have a GREAT day, or don’t…..but remember, the choice is yours! Today is thursday January 16, 20014. Today is also International Hot & Spicy Food Day. Archaeological evidence suggests that people have been using hot spices in their recipes for over 6000 years. Did you know that the hottest chili pepper in the world is the Naga Jolokia? On average, one of these peppers is over 170 times spicier than a jalapeno pepper!
Throughout the world, there are hundreds of different spices that contribute to an array of hot flavored foods. Hot foods can actually be very good for you because of their medicinal and antimicrobial properties. Garlic, chilies, onions, allspice, and oregano all kill bacteria and make food safer to consume. To celebrate this holiday, try a few hot peppers or hot sauces with your food today! As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, our new out of class policy is in effect school wide. Today, during 4th hour join Ms. Zundel in room 5 for the Reading Workshop. Then, tomorrow come in to catch up on the ones you may have missed, math 1st hour, reading 2nd hour and writing 3rd hour. Remember, when you attend 80% or more of the workshops AND pass your AIMS, you will receive that fancy chrome book. So, mark your calendars and plan on being there! Okay, listen up! Starting next week, Tuesday, you will have to have your student ID to receive a bus pass. Students that have their student ID will be served first. Anybody without an ID will have to wait. If you don’t have a School ID, let the office know and they will get you taken care of. Also, you guys are doing great at getting yourselves to your 3rd hour on time. Remember, the student store will open at 11:45 at that first bell and close at the second bell. You must be in your classroom by the third bell, because your teachers will be locking the doors and you will have to go to the front to get a pass. However, as you’ve hopefully heard, starting next week, if you are not in your seat by that third bell, you will not be permitted into class and you will have to leave campus. So get in the habit of hustling to your third hour and being on time NOW. Also, remember that if you are a graduating senior and you are thinking about taking the SAT’s you need to see mrs. Rodriguez. She will be the one who can help you get more information on testing dates and prep. So, hornets, you may have noticed that there are some boxes in your classes room labeled “pennies”. |
